Today we’re going to talk about which jobs cause a bad back and what can you do about it. Back problems are common place in society these days. It’s important to ask if there might be a certain risk factor for back injuries in your life that can be possibly be mitigated or avoided if possible.
While we cannot pick our genetic makeup or even current occupation for most of us anyway. How we interact with our daily tasks can be the difference maker between disabling pain or minor aches. Some of the most strenuous jobs are those tied to the construction industry, concrete reinforcement workers and carpenters.
They tend to have more back pain. What it’s typically seen in our office is these workers in these types of comprehensive labor or labor-intensive jobs. It’s important to note that certain locations in the spine and body are more opt to injuries more than others. Lifting heavy weights for example concrete, lumber especially in awkward positions can make the disc and lower back vulnerable to load which can exceed the strength of the ligaments which are there to hold back any type of injury and cause the disc to even bolder herniate.
If the worker can use good ergonomics and symmetrical lifting the disc can be more safely resisting of the load. It is also known as the spine is stiffer in the morning and develops higher pressure in the disc when the worker lifts at this time of the day.
Taking this into account, it may be safer to do more light lifting in their early part of the morning or early part of the day and almost every case one should never lift anything, even a light object with a twisting motion because it puts a lot of torque on the spine and it creates more susceptibility to injury.
Getting a buddy to help is also another solution that a lot of people don’t think of. Sitting for long periods of time is also very demanding. Even though it’s not labor intensive. First there is the inactivity which causes the muscles to become weak. The spine is designed for movement, especially walking. An apple a day is good, but a walk a day is even better.
Sitting also causes an increased pressure in the discs themselves of the lower back. If you add vibration for example like a bus driver, this sitting seems to be even making worse. So it’s important to have an anti-vibration seat or proper ergonomics. or a proper support to help counter measure these imbalances.
Each job has its own unique ergonomic characteristics and you should be assessed accordingly. Proper spinal posture while working is a key component to overall good health and is the best preventive measure for your back injury.
